(Omni)Graph Sketcher: Godsend for Econ Class

with 4 comments

Update: Graph Sketcher went through a metamorphosis and has become OmniGraph Sketcher. It has some improve features such as the ability to save to image feature and easier user interface for creating curves like sin or cos lines. If you already purchased the original Graph Sketcher, you should already received an email detailing a free upgrade. It cost 25 bucks. Well worth it if you’re taking something like MacroEcon.

(Mac) Macroeconomics is a tough course to take notes on. Taking notes can quickly look like an abstract art piece.  Sometimes students bring those novelty pens with all the different colors in one device to draw the impact of taxes on a supply and demand graph. What a mess that becomes–blue and red lines interacting as green bars illustrate something important. Reviewing this is painful to say the least. Point is, creating graphs on paper is self-defeating when you can’t tell what you’re looking at.

Here’s a cool little program known as Graph Sketcher for the Mac.

In developing graphs, you want the ability to bend the line to create curves. Got it! You want to drag and drop data from Excel and make a supply and demand curve. Covered! Color shade that Consumer Surplus area? No worries. How about dotted lines for point of equilibrium? You can do that. What about dragging and reshaping the vector lines? That’s fun to do.
There’s a demo on the website, demonstrating the program and showing how easy it is.  Its a great tool to push out professional graphs for midterm papers or note taking.

Cool thing is after completing one, you can save as a JPEG and insert into most word processing programs like Google Docs or Microsoft Word. Its free for a trail of 30 days. But fork over 10 bucks and it’s yours.
